To many of our new members, the name Chris Spealler means nothing. However, to those that have doing this a little while, that name is synonymous with hard work and crushing the bigger and stronger competition because of it.

Chris is the only athlete to compete in all six CrossFit Games and despite deciding to retire after The Games last year at age 33, has decided to return for more again this year and is currently sitting in the top 150 men in the worldwide standings.

Although most of you are not competing in The Open this year because it started the same week you started doing CrossFit, Chris wrote a blog post leading up to the last workout, 13.5, that I think rings true beyond just this competition. It is titled “Keeping Your Head In It!” and you can find it here.

My two favorite points from Chris in this post are:

  1. “The past doesn’t define you TODAY”, which doesn’t just apply to past athletic performances, but past work interactions or bad habits you’re trying to kick, etc.
  2. “Remember, CrossFit is not the Games.  The community of people that throw down every day is CrossFit.  As Rx’d or not, a regional or games contender or not.  Soccer mom to elite athlete, we make up the community.  The overwhelming majority of the community may never walk on the Games stadium floor but will have far more impact on their local community and possibly even farther by their daily efforts in the gym. THAT is CrossFit.”

What I take from this is that CrossFit is not just about coming in to the gym and working out so you can lose some weight or get big muscles to show off. It’s about pushing your limits, expanding your mental and physical capacity, learning to focus when you become overwhelmed by the task at hand, giving it your all and being thankful for what you have and how far you’ve come.
