Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2015

Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2015

Happy New Year!!!

With 2015 officially upon us I have no doubt that many/most of you have made New Year’s resolutions.

Now, New Year’s resolutions are great and all, but they are often very vague and lack specific enough objectives to really drive results (i.e. “I want to lose weight” or “I want to read more” or “I want to eat better”).

With that being said, I’d like to take this opportunity to challenge you all to set AT LEAST 3 goals for 2015.

Now, before I turn you loose on setting your 3 goals, I’d like to give you a few more guidelines that will help you choose them.

My favorite process for goal setting is to use the S.M.A.R.T. criteria to help guide the goals I’m going to set.

This process says that all goals should be Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, and Time-targeted.

In more detail the criteria for your goals should be as follows:

There needs to be a definite point of success or failure. This often goes hand in hand with the “Measurable”, but “lose weight” is not specific enough, “lose 10 lbs” is.
If your goal for 2015 is to “lose 10 lbs”, another vague goal may be “eat better”, however there is no way to measure this. A good way to set a measurable goal that has to do with eating better would be “cook at least 2 meals a day at home from real ingredients (frozen meals don’t count).” A goal like this will no doubt help you reach your weight loss goal.
This one is pretty easy. We know who’s going to be achieving the goal, you, so assign the work to yourself. DONE.
Goals don’t always need to be extreme or crazy because you made them on New Year’s Eve. Set goals that you know are realistic with hard work and dedication. When you achieve them you will be even more motivated to set the next one.
This one is most likely pretty easy as well because you’re setting goals for the year of 2015. However, you may want to set shorter deadlines for a few of your goals to keep your eyes on the prize throughout the year. You can also use this as an opportunity to set check-points along the way, like “lose 3 lbs by April 30th”, “Lose 6 lbs by August 31st” and finally, “Lose 10 lbs by December 31st 2015”.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I’m going to give you a look into my fitness goals for 2015 so that they’re out there to keep me honest and motivate me to stay focused.

Make the podium at a local throwdown
Finish in the top-20 in NorCal during The Open and make the super-regional
500 lb Deadlift
315 lb Clean & Jerk
255 lb Squat Snatch
Fran: Sub 1:30
30 Muscle-Ups For Time: Sub-4:00

I have other goals for 2015 that are not fitness related and I will keep them closer to the vest.

However, this should let you know that I have some skin in the game and I’m not just asking you to set goals, but challenging you to join me on a journey to get better again this year.

We here at Cróga CrossFit will take all your goals seriously and will do everything in our power to help you achieve them during 2015. Just let us know what they are and how we can help.
