Justin Fay is our Member of the Year for 2024!
Since joining Croga Fitness just over a year and a half ago, Justin has become an incredible part of our community. His dedication and hard work have led to an amazing transformation—he’s lost over 150 pounds and continues to push himself toward an even healthier lifestyle.
But Justin’s impact goes far beyond his own journey. He invites others to join him on hikes, helps people find jobs, and shows up to every event he can. His drive, determination, and generosity inspire those around him, and we are truly grateful he found his way to Croga Fitness.
We are proud to call Justin not just a member, but our 2024 Member of the Year!
Can you tell us a little about yourself (family, work, hobbies)?
My name is Justin Fay. I was born in Santa Clara Ca. I’m the oldest of 3 boys and have lived in the Bay Area the majority of my life.
I’ve been married to my beautiful wife and partner Amber for 8 years. We have two boys Alex and Dylan ages 8 and 3 and for work I’m a Sr. Recruiter at PayPal supporting their Consumer Group Marketing and Communications Organization. Hit me up if you’re ever looking for a job.
My favorite hobbies are Hiking, fishing, restoring classic cars, painting, drawing, researching emerging technologies and I’ve recently taken up trail running. When I’m not focused on hobbies I’m usually hanging out with my kids.
What are some new things that you have learned about yourself since starting Croga Fitness?
I’ve learned that I have terrible mobility LOL!
I’ve also learned that I’m not as strong as I thought I was, the gym can be a humbling place and that I have a lot of work to do in order to reach my fitness goals.
On the contrary, I’ve learned that with hard work, discipline and persistence you can accomplish things that you wouldn’t think are still possible at my age.
Since joining us, what are the goals you have set and achieved?
When I joined Croga I set major goals of getting in shape, losing 100lbs and reversing some health issues that had popped up. I was 380lbs, I had pre-diabetes, edema and I was scared that if I didn’t take action my life was at risk.
I made the decision to take action and join Croga so that I could get healthy and take control of my life so that I can be around a long time for my family and young children.
Over the last year and few months. I’ve lost 185lbs, I reversed my pre diabetes, cured my edema and improved my overall health and fitness drastically.
I still have many goals and there is still work to do but so far so good!
Do you have a favorite WOD, lift, or movement? What’s one you love to hate?
I love all variations of WODs but if I had to pick one, it would probably be an AMRAP or some sort of metabolic conditioning that includes lots of running, rowing and lifting of any type.
I also love bench press and farmer carries.
And I love to hate wall walks. I hate them but I secretly love them and one of these days I’ll get handstands and handstand push ups!
What’s your biggest fitness goal for this upcoming year?
I have two major goals. The first is to increase my mobility and the second is to build more strength. Particularly pull and back strength. Shoulders. I would also love to achieve a 225lb bench press and finally get pull ups!
What is one thing about you that people may not know?
Great question I’m an open book so this one is tough.
I’ve never traveled outside of the United States. I’m a first generation American on my Dad’s side of the family. My Dad immigrated to America from Scotland.
We know you like a good hiking spot, which spots are your favorite and what spots are bucket list hikes?
My favorite hiking spot is Alum Rock Park because it’s basically in my backyard and I know the trails like the back of my hand. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook I post a shot of the top of Eagle Rock at Alum Rock everytime I go hike in the park which is often sometimes 5+ days a week.
Bucket list hike would be Patagonia Chile
If you could have one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?
Not the healthiest but probably Shepherds Pie or a good ol New York Steak.
If you could have a conversation with anyone that ever existed, dead or alive, who would it be?
My Grandpa Chelsey. He passed away before I could accomplish much in life and I’d love to sit and tell him about my family and what I’ve been able to achieve since he’s passed. He was a great role model and always cared for me while growing up.
If you could give your former self any piece of advice about your current journey, what would it be?
Don’t waste time when it comes to your goals. We only have one shot at this thing called life. Be fearless, don’t be afraid to ask for help and surround yourself with people who are honest and supportive.
Anything else you would like to add?
I am humbled to be named Member of the year and I share this honor with all the members at Croga who simply show up. You are all amazing and I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of the Croga Family and community.
To the coaches – each one of you are amazing and so good at what you do. Your selflessness and commitment to helping folks like me get strong and healthy does not go unnoticed and your daily sacrifices are appreciated more than you’ll ever know. Thank you all for everything that you do.
