Moxie Madness – Affiliate Championship Recap

Moxie Madness – Affiliate Championship Recap

First off, I’d like to thank all of our members, friends and family that made it out to San Jose State this past weekend to cheer our teams on and also those of you that couldn’t make it, but were cheering for us from home and on social media.

Next, I’d like to say that it was an absolute honor to compete side by side our other 7 athletes and call them teammates. You’d be hard pressed to find another team, let alone two, that had as much fun as we did over the course of the weekend.

Way back when Kelly and I first started talking about opening Cróga CrossFit, one of the first things we said was that we wanted to “build a family of athletes that constantly push each other to improve physically and mentally with a goal of becoming the best version of themselves possible”.

This didn’t mean that we NEEDED our members to compete, but the camaraderie, support, and friendship that I saw between all our athletes, everyone that attended, those that cheered us on online, and those that made “how’d you guys do this weekend?” their first question when they walked in the door on Monday made me realize that we have done exactly what we set out to do.

Now, how about some accolades for our athletes that gave it their all this weekend.

First up, Lily: Even though Lily has participated in a ton of competitive soccer games/tournaments in her life, I could tell that she was a little nervous for her first CrossFit event. She did a great job staying focused, coming up with a gameplan for each workout and executing, including a PR 3RM Front Squat in the first event.

Kristi: She always had a smile on her face and was an absolute bullet with a sandbag on her back. Who would’ve thought that Kristi was faster with 45 lbs on her back than she is on a horse. She also impressed with the weight she was able to move with such a small frame and her constant drive to do more work was integral to the success of the grey team.

Steve: There was absolutely no one at the competition, athlete or spectator, that had more fun than Steve. He kept his teams spirits high, kept their judges laughing, took some awesome pictures while stretching, threw up a few Roc-A-Fella Diamonds when his favorite artist Jay-Z came on, and absolutely crushed a 225# 3RM shoulder-to-overhead.

Todd: This man displayed some serious dad strength and some solid teamwork all weekend, including a 245# front squat triple. He also brought multiple Thunderdome references and some solid laughs to the pop-up tent while we were all hanging out between events. The fact that this was his second event in a handful of months really helped keep the team composed and organized.

Diana: We have always known that Diana is a good athlete and a competitor and it showed this weekend. She did well in everything we were asked to do, met and exceeded her own expectations on several events and pushed herself to the limit during each workout. Although her current sport of choice is softball, I think we may have sparked some additional CrossFit interest and she may have a new sport to dedicate her time to after her final big softball tournament of the year, this fall.

Madi: Another competition, another impressive showing by our SIXTEEN-year-old phenom. Madi has competed before, but this was her first adult event and also her first RX event. To say that her performance was impressive would be a huge understatement. There were spectators commenting all weekend about how good of a young athlete she was and when they found out how old she actually is they’re jaws dropped. She set a 3RM Front Squat PR, met adversity in the sandbag thruster workout and pushed through without even a hint of pain on her face even though we all knew it wasn’t her favorite thing to do and did everything she was asked to do to help our team do our best.

Coach Anthony: This guy is a stud. He went out there, crushed every weight that was put in front of him, 345# 3RM front squat, 275# 3RM hang clean, hit 20 reps of a 275# deadlift unbroken, destroyed the rower in the endurance event, and the list goes on. And he did all of this with 3 donuts and a couple cups of coffee to start each day, haha. In all seriousness though, Anthony has a bright future in the sport of CrossFit and he does extremely well as a teammate. I’m excited to see what the next year brings for him in the competitive CrossFit world.

Kelly: I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Kelly specifically here. Cróga wouldn’t be what it is today and we wouldn’t have been able to compete this weekend without her. She has done and continues to do a ton for our gym in the background and literally gave her entire weekend to this competition even though she wasn’t competing. Thank you for all that you do and all the love and support you show for me and all of our athletes/members.

Finally, I’d like to once again thank each and every one of you that made it out to watch us compete. Every time I saw another face in the crowd it brought a huge smile to my face, no matter how painful the workout was, and your support makes a world of difference at the end of the day. We may not have finished on top of the podium, but I really felt like this was a huge step for Cróga CrossFit and I hope to see more and more of you competing in the future with me standing outside the ropes cheering you on.
