July Member of the Month – Steve S

July Member of the Month – Steve S

Steve Smith is our July Member of the Month

Congratulations to Steve S for being our Member of the Month for July!

Steve is a very unique individual that brings humor, sarcasm and hard work to each class. Many of you know that Steve has been lobbying for Member of the Month for quite some time now, but you probably didn’t know that he has been in the top 3 of attendance for 5 months straight, so he’s definitely put in the time to earn the title. From the first time Steve stepped in the gym he worked hard and even during the first couples weeks of complete soreness, he never missed a day. It has been fun watching him get a hang of all the movements and now seeing his focus turn to getting stronger and more proficient at everything CrossFit entails.

Here is a little Q&A with Steve about his experience with Cróga CrossFit and how he feels about being member of the month.

(David): When did you join Cróga?

(Steve): First off I would like to thank my friends, family and fans who motivated me to strive for this humbling award. I joined Cróga on October 17th, 2013…it was a Tuesday. Kristi and I had recently moved in together and she made some nasty comments about how comfortable I was becoming with my appearance so she dropped some not so subtle hints about me joining CrossFit. She had worked with Dave and had joined Cróga from the beginning and basically gave me an ultimatum of shaping up or shipping out.

(D): What were you doing before for fitness?

(S): Before Cróga I was mainly getting my fitness from back alley bar fights, hustling basketball games in the parks of San Jose and running from the law. When I wasn’t doing all those things I was just going to 24Hr Fitness, hitting the Spin Bike while watching episodes of Dawson’s Creek (it’s a guilty pleasure of mine).

(D): What improvements have you seen in the way you look, feel and perform?

(S):  The biggest improvement I’ve seen in my life is the way Kristi looks at me now.  The biggest improvement I’ve seen in my performance is the way I have been able to handle workouts with multiple exercises.  It’s been really motivating to be able to move through workouts without taking too long of breaks between movements or resting mid set.  I’ve also been able to Rx most exercises (except for heavier squats/deadlifts, I still need a lot of work on those) and I certainly wasn’t anywhere near Rx’ing when I first started.

(D): What’s your favorite WOD?

(S):  My favorite WOD would probably be Jack, push press, kettle bell swings and box jumps for 20 minutes. I like when we combine multiple exercises into one workout.

(D): What’s your least favorite WOD?

(S): My least favorite WOD would probably be anything that requires a lot of body weight movements and has Preston coaching (just kidding, Preston). Toes to bar and pull ups are still something I need a lot of work with

(D): What do you love about CrossFit?

(S):  The thing I love most about CrossFit is that I do things that I would never design on my own. Every day is a new challenge and something unexpected which is what keeps me motivated and coming back for almost 10 months. The thing I probably enjoy more than the exercising is the community at Croga. I have met a ton of great people that I really enjoy seeing each day. Croga has done a great job by creating a welcoming environment that combines fun and fitness. I get to socialize and crack some jokes while getting an intense workout each day.

(D): What’s been your favorite culinary discovery since joining Cróga?

(S):  I don’t really do the paleo diet all too much but I do love the fact that it incorporates bacon and eggs into it. Since breakfast is my favorite meal of the day I get to add a couple of extra slices to my morning intake and feel good about it.

(D): What’s your biggest fitness goal for 2014?

(S):  My fitness goal for 2014 has just now been achieved by receiving this honor, but my other fitness goals for 2014 are to improve on my weaknesses. Ever since the PR board got going last month it has been motivating to add a few to it. As Todd once said, “PRs are addicting.” I really just want to be a better all around CrossFit athlete so I will never have to see my friend/rival, Ben Petty, turn in a better time or score than me ever again. For all you 6am’ers who see him two times a month you know who I am referring to.

(D): What words of advice do you have for new members or people considering joining Cróga CrossFit?

(S): The best piece of advice I could give someone who is starting up or considering CrossFit is don’t stop going. It will be the hardest few weeks of your athletic life and sometimes you feel like you can’t go but get in the gym anyways. I had to take that advice when I first started and Dave tried to kill me with his workouts. I can’t really recall what they were but I remember icing down everyday when I got home and when I went to work. Each day you go is a day that you will get better. The workouts will never become easy but you will improve with both time and commitment.

(D): 10,000 push-ups or 10,000 sit-ups?

(S): I would do 10,000 sit ups over push ups in a heartbeat. I think I could convince myself to do 10,000 sit ups because of the “sit” part. Makes it sound easier.

(D): Anything to add that we didn’t touch on yet?

(S): Yes, there are a few questions that I have for you. Will Preston be taking his job of valet seriously for this month when I need my car parked or will there be a designated space?

(D): Valet isn’t in Preston’s official job title, however, I’m sure he would consider if there was a $10+ tip involved.

(S): Shall I provide an 8.5″ x 11″ autographed glossy for the soon to be created “MOTM” wall or do you want a larger 10″ x 12″?

(D): At this time we don’t have a spot picked out for our MOTM wall. However, if you’d like to email us a photo we will be sure to print it once we do find a space to honor the MOTM.

(S): Do you think Kristi will get tired of hearing me talk about how excited I am that I am Member of the Month?

(D): If she didn’t get tired of you talking about how much you wanted to win for 3 months, I’m sure she’ll be able to survive 1 month of you talking about how excited you are about winning.

Once again, congratulations Steve. Keep up the hard work and enjoy the gold RPM jump rope. You’ve definitely earned it and we’re looking forward to watching you this weekend at Moxie Madness and starting your competitive CrossFit career.
