Coach Dave & The Fittest Games

As most of you know, Kelly and I traveled to Austin, Texas this past weekend so that I could compete in The Fittest Games hosted by CrossFit Central.

I thought I’d do a little write-up and add the videos of my events at the end so that you all could get an idea of what it was like, how it went, and hopefully spur some interest in you to spectate or participate in a local throwdown in the future.

This was hands down the biggest competition I’ve been a part of so far (98 men in the Amateur Men’s Division) and also my best performance to date (I finished 8th).

The display of community at CrossFit Central was outstanding with a couple thousand people in attendance. The competition was fierce with the Amateur & Masters divisions full of stud athletes, the Teams doing some incredible things and the Pros impressing everyone with their amazing capacity and abilities.

The event was very well run with impeccable judging, awesome sponsors supporting the event and athletes and a volunteer staff that kept everything running smoothly and on time throughout the weekend.

I am very happy with the result, my goal was to be in the top 10, but the competitor in me knows that I left some points out there and could have done just a little bit better in each event.

During the event it felt like time was moving at a snails pace. I’m not sure if this was because I was nervous and focused the whole weekend or because it was freezing cold, maybe a little of all 3. However, with three events on Friday and two events on Saturday, there was a lot going on in a fairly short amount of time.

The 3 workouts that were scheduled for Friday would result in 4 scores (the first event had a score for time and a score for weight moved) and after each event Kelly and I would check the leaderboard over and over again until all scores were entered and then figure out where I stood. After day 1 I was in 6th place with 1 event to go on Saturday morning to see if I could stay in the top 10 and make the final.

The outpouring of support from the Cróga Community throughout Friday as the events occurred and the scoreboard was updated was amazing. It felt like I was receiving facebook updates, tweets, emails & text messages every 5 minutes and this really fueled me throughout the day.

On Saturday morning with 1 event left, not the best event for me, but not the worst, I knew I had to stay the course, finish in the top 25% or so to get into the final and see what happened from there. This event didn’t go quite the way I planned and we now know I need to work on going faster during the short events, but I finished in 40th place, which was good enough to put me in 8th place and into the finals.

That afternoon there was another athlete briefing where the final event was laid out for those that were to participate and it was a doozy. It consisted of 3 different workouts, with 2 athletes being eliminated after each stage. The first WOD was a short chipper, the second was 20 clean & jerks @ 155 lbs and the third was a variation of “Fran” 15-12-9 Thrusters @ 95 lbs & pull-ups. Unfortunately I was 1 of the 2 people eliminated during the short chipper, but it was not due to a lack of effort.

When it was all said and done, I was completely spent. I had achieved my goal of making the top 10, but had hoped I could bring home a 1st place finish for our Cróga family. As I said earlier, I was completely overwhelmed by the love and support I received from you all and I couldn’t be more proud to be able to represent such a great group of people.

I also need to express a BIG thank you and I love you to my sidekick all weekend, Kelly. I wouldn’t want to have made the trip without you and there is absolutely no way I would’ve been able to accomplish nearly what I did without you by my side every step of the way, even in the sub-zero temperatures!

Thank you all for being so awesome and I look forward to having as many of you as possible come watch our young gun, Madi Cornelius, and I compete next weekend, February 8th & 9th, at the Moxie Madness Individual Series.

Below are the WODs from The Fittest Games and the corresponding videos. I am wearing my green Cróga CrossFit shirt in the first 3 videos and the new grey lion shirt in the last one. We didn’t get a video of the finals because of the way it was formatted, but if there is one released online later I’ll be sure to post it.
